Painting a large Imperial Knight is a very different experience from painting a normal-sized miniature. The models are much bigger, have large flat panels, and contain a huge amount of detail, making them both challenging and rewarding to paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first step is preparation. With a large model, taking your time with assembly and cleaning is especially important. Mould lines and imperfections are much more noticeable on large armour panels, so I make sure everything is cleaned up before priming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I also like to think about the colour scheme before starting. On a large model, the colours need to work together across the entire miniature, so choosing the main armour colour, secondary colours and details beforehand helps keep the finished Knight consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The large armour panels are one of the most important parts of an Imperial Knight. I build up the base colour in thin, even coats and make sure the surface stays smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the base colour is finished, I add shading around the edges and recessed areas before applying highlights. Edge highlighting is particularly effective on Knights because it helps define the large armour plates and makes the model look much sharper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imperial Knights have plenty of smaller details, including cables, weapons, mechanical parts and decorations. I paint these separately so they stand out from the large armour sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Metallic areas are also important. Using darker metallics for the mechanical parts and brighter highlights on exposed edges can create a convincing worn-metal appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hardest part of painting a large Knight is keeping the finish consistent. Because the model is so large, brush marks, uneven paint and mistakes are much easier to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another challenge is simply the amount of time involved. Large models require patience, but the extra effort is worth it when you see the finished Knight standing on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Painting an Imperial Knight is a big project, but it’s also one of the most satisfying miniatures to complete. The large size gives you plenty of space to experiment with colour, shading, highlights and weathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
